Introduction to Explore API

Explore API forecasts the GHG impact of adopting a regenerative agricultural practice on a field.

Overview

Explore API allows users to predict or forecast the emissions impact of adopting a regenerative agricultural practice, or intervention, for a specific field. Explore uses the DNDC model to simulate soil carbon and GHG emissions/removals outcomes.

DNDC Soil Model and Explore

The Explore API utilizes DNDC, an advanced model approved by leading standards for measuring soil outcomes. Peer-reviewed in more than 500 publications, DNDC is the industry's most trusted and scalable soil model for use in agriculture. DNDC simulates how soil microbes react to changes in the soil and the resulting greenhouse gas effects. This model can be applied to crops including corn, soybeans, wheat and cotton, plus a range of practice categories, making DNDC highly scalable across supply sheds and projects. See https://www.dndc.sr.unh.edu/ for more.

Estimating Carbon Outcomes

With Explore API you can estimate carbon emissions for a coming year or crop season to inform farmer payments or incentivize high-impact practice adoption. You'll provide historical practices for a field, as well as the intended farm management events for the upcoming season to simulate the emissions reduction potential for those specific events.

Additionally, Explore API can be used for scenario planning or sustainability investment planning. In this case, you'll provide the historical events for the field, and select an intervention practice, or a practice change such as 'reduced tillage' or 'reduced applied nitrogen'. Explore API will simulate the emissions reduction potential for the selected intervention practice(s), using the fields history to inform the change.
