Fertilizer machinery use methodology

Calculates emissions due to combustion of fuel by machinery applying fertilizer.

Overview

Quantifies the emissions generated due to use of machines when applying fertilizer. It considers the number of fertilization events performed on the field, the category of fertilizer applied, and the type of equipment used.

Limitations

  • This methodology does not include the actual production of the machinery or maintenance.

  • It does not include any combination fertilization events like fertilization with planting or fertilization with tillage.

  • The Ecoinvent data used for emissions are limited to only a few application methods. All method used are assumed to be broadcasted except for in the US where there is injection.

For each measurement there are inputs required. In the case that the user cannot provide the inputs then Regrow will default them.

Crop

The name of your measured crop. This should be a single crop per measurement.

Harvested yield

The harvested fresh yield for your measured crop, before any drying or other losses might occur.

Location

The area used in the production of your measured crop. This should be a single field or single managed unit.

Location is used to inform the emissions factors used. In most cases this is a global value for the crop and some select crops x geography this is country-specific.

Country-level or field level

Fertilizer product

Is the product organic or inorganic? This informs machinery in addition to inputs below.

This informs which application machinery is chosen. This is only available for inorganics.

This informs which application machinery is chosen. This is only available for organics.

Application date

This informs how many uses of the machinery took place for that cultivation cycle. If there are two application dates, then we assume two machinery uses.

Assumptions of on-field fertilization activities

If the fertilizer is any inorganic and:

  • In the US, then

    • if Regrow’s method = broadcast, use “fertilising, by broadcaster” Ecoinvent EF

    • if Regrow method = subsurface, use “fertilising, by injection” Ecoinvent EF

  • In any other country, then all Regrow methods will use “fertilising, by broadcaster” Ecoinvent EF

If the fertilizer is any organic then use

  • liquid manure spreading, by vacuum tanker if liquid

  • solid manure loading and spreading, by hydraulic loader and spreader if dry

Ecoinvent v3.11 is used for all emissions factor coefficients.
