Defaulting neutral detergent fiber in Enteric API
Summarizing the logic used to add NDF for grazing diets if a client chooses not to provide it.
Today in the Enteric, the diet type “grazing” requires neutral detergent fiber percentage (NDF). NDF is a metric for fiber content of the forage. It is a metric of the forage quality and digestability. Likewise it is a key variable for enteric emissions and must be >0 for grazing cattle.
In many cases, clients do not know what type of grass or in what quantity their cattle are consuming. Although it is always more accurate to provide this value directly from the rancher, in that situation it cannot, Regrow has a simple mechanism for adding NDF percentage on the clients behalf.
For the diet type “grazing”, if is not provided (e.g. passed to API as 'null'), then NDF is calculated by Regrow.
The location of the ranch will be used to place the cattle in cool season (blue), warm season (red) or transitional (yellow). Then the corresponding NDF value used will be an average of grasses occuring in that area.
