Crop protection production methodology

Calculates emission due to the production of all crop protection used to produce the measured crop.

Overview

Crop protection production activity quantified emissions associated with the production of all plant protection used on the measured crop.

This methodology assumes a single ''unspecified' type which type which ty This methodology also assume a raa that that is an average rate per geographic region, at the country level. In some historic years, the country the average rate adjusts per year of the measurement. See default sources and limitations for more information.

Limitations

This Tier 1 calculation is not specific to any chemical pesticide nor does it take into account any nuances or changes in application rate due to needs of a crop. So for this methodology one can expect Measured Crop A in Australia in 2024 to have the same emissions as Measured Crop B in Australia in 2024 for crop protection production. This activity also uses emissions factor coefficients that are global, not country or regionally specific.

This methodology does not take into account if a cover crop was terminated via herbicide. It only assumes winter kill or planting directly into the cover.

User Inputs

For each measurement there are inputs required. In the case that the user cannot provide the inputs then Regrow will default them according to our tier methodology.

Inputs required

Description

Unit/Options

Crop

The name of your measured crop. This should be a single crop per measurement.

If a cover crop is included in the cultivation cycle of the measured crop, then it will be included in the emissions attributed to the measured crop.

See our list of supported crops

Harvested yield

The harvested fresh yield for your measured crop, before any drying or other losses might occur.

This is used as the yield denominator.

kg per hectare

Location

The area used in the production of your measured crop. This should be a single field or single managed unit.

Location is used to inform the emissions factors used. In most cases this is a global value for the crop and some select crops x geography this is country-specific.

Country-level or field level

Crop protection application rate

This input is defaulted today.

The amount crop protection active ingredient applied to produced the measured crop. Crop protection includes: pesticide, herbicide, insecticide and fungicide.

kg of active per hectare

Assumptions for crop protection production

Crop protection application, and likewise production, is only assumed on the commodity crop.

Default sources

Emissions factor coefficient

Emissions factor is sourced from Ecoinvent v3.11, which is sourced from Ecoinvent v3.11, which uses the ‘unspecified’ pesticide data source. The EF dataset was “modelled from the arithmetic mean of all inputs and outputs of the production of several representing substances. The reference product is modelled to represent a pure substance single pesticide rate, and this single rate is inclusive of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.” - Ecoinvent v3.11

Crop protection rate

Crop protection rate is defaulted using country level values. Source: Global pesticide use and trade database, Shattuck_2023 / GloPUT in kg/ha of active.

Sourced values have been adjusted to account for:

  • Changes in country names: Country names were updated to reflect names in 2025.

  • Gaps in data per year: Where there were gaps the following rules are used: use last available year for rate, except in most recent year when it uses the first available and replays that value to current year. For this source the latest available year is usually 2019, so this year’s value is replayed forward every year to present day.
